Nitrogen

Nitrogen (N) is a primary building block for plant protoplasm. It is needed for flower differentiation, speedy shoot growth, the health of flower buds and increases the quality of fruit set. It also acts as a catalyst for the other plant minerals.

Nitrogen forms part of the chlorophyll molecule, which gives plants their green color and is involved in creating food for the plant through photosynthesis.

Importance of Nitrogen in plants

  • Nitrogen is responsible for the green coloring of plants– Which enables the plants to manufacture food.
  • It promotes the active growth of plant leaves enabling plants develop new growth each stage of development.

Deficiency symptoms

Symptoms of N deficiency are general chlorosis of lower mature leaves, in severe cases necrosis of the older leaves.

In cereals, yellow discoloration from the leaf tip backward in the form of a ‘V’ is commonly observed. Stunted and slow growth of the plant in general is also a key indicator.
