Soil Baseline Carbon Mapping

Understand Your Soil's Carbon Content

Cropnuts’ Soil Baseline Carbon Mapping is a service that enables farmers and land managers to accurately measure and monitor the amount of carbon stored in their soils. By establishing a baseline measurement our experts can determine the total stocks of organic carbon present in the soil before the start of a project. This allows quantifying the future carbon removals/sequestrations in the lifetime of the project.

What is Soil Baseline Carbon Mapping?

Soil Baseline Carbon Mapping is a process of measuring and mapping the amount of carbon stored in the soil before any land use or management changes occur. By establishing a baseline, farmers and land managers can better understand the current state of their soil and track changes over time. Cropnuts experts use advanced techniques such as soil sampling, laboratory analysis, and GIS mapping to provide accurate and reliable data on soil carbon content.

Benefits of Soil Baseline Carbon Mapping:

  1. Track carbon sequestration: Soil carbon is a critical component in mitigating climate change. By tracking soil carbon content over time, farmers can measure the effectiveness of their land management practices in sequestering carbon and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  2. Meet regulatory requirements: Soil Baseline Carbon Mapping is becoming increasingly important for meeting regulatory requirements related to carbon credits, carbon taxes, and sustainability certifications.
  3. Optimize soil health: By monitoring soil carbon content, farmers can make informed decisions about the type and amount of fertilizers, organic matter, and other inputs required to improve soil health and increase crop yields.

Our Process

At Cropnuts, we take pride in using the most advanced and reliable methodologies to provide our clients with accurate information on soil health. That’s why our process for Soil Baseline Carbon Mapping incorporates the internationally recognized VERRA standard for the quantification of soil carbon.

Our Process

Our team of experts will visit your site to understand your specific needs and goals. We’ll discuss the project scope, timelines, and any other important details that will inform our approach.

We will determine the different strata of the project site in order to identify the total number of and the location of the sampling sites.

We’ll collect soil samples from your site using standardized sampling protocols to ensure accuracy and consistency. Samples will be brought back to the lab where they will be analysed for soil organic carbon and bulk density.

Our team will run laboratory analyses on the collected samples to determine the content of organic carbon in each sample. The laboratory results will be used to quantify the carbon stocks (in tons/ha) in each of the project strata allowing us to map the carbon stocks across the project area.

We’ll provide a comprehensive report that includes our findings and a baseline soil carbon map.
